Why steam is such a big help

Reshaping fabric

What is ironing, anyway? It is the reshaping of textile fabric from wrinkled to smooth. Simple enough on the surface, quite interesting when you look closely: The heat of the iron loosens the connection between the molecule-chains in the fibres. The pressure of the soleplate then reshapes the fabric, and when it cools down, the connections between the molecule-chains rebuild. So what was a stubborn crease is now smooth and will stay that way (until it is worn and washed again…).

Steam speeds up heating up

Compared to „dry“ ironing, using steam speeds up the heating of the fabric considerably. The reason is that steam transports heat quicker than dry air, so the heat permeates the fabric a lot faster and deeper with steam. This is another way of saying that with steam, you iron faster.

L’umidità necessaria

Il vapore non è solo un modo molto efficiente di trasmissione del calore. Tutti abbiamo imparato a scuola che l’acqua bolle alla temperatura di 100° C e si trasforma in vapore. Questo è vero, ma vale solo a una pressione atmosferica normale e a livello del mare. Quindi se non si vive da qualche parte in cima al mondo, il vapore che fuoriesce dal ferro è a 100 °C. In un sistema stirante, il vapore viene generato sotto pressione in un’unità separata. Maggiore è la pressione, più tempo impiega l’acqua a bollire e più caldo è il vapore: il vapore generato a 5 bar è già a 150 °C. Quindi, la pressione più elevata rende il vapore più caldo e gli permette di permeare il tessuto più velocemente e più in profondità.
